New Hampshire Congressman Paul Hodes is standing by President-elect Barack Obama’s nominee for Treasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner, despite revelations that Geithner had failed to pay $34,000 in taxes several years ago.

He says Geithner is an outstanding economic mind who has received bi-partisan accolades for his service.

Hodes says Geithner understands that the country needs to overhaul its financial regulatory system and help middle-class families struggling with foreclosures and the credit crunch.

Obama called disclosures about Geithner’s tax problems an embarrassment, but said Geithner’s "innocent mistake" shouldn’t keep him from confirmation as the new administration’s top official in urgent efforts to revive the economy.
