The Town of Hinesburg has agreed to pay $85,000 to a former police chief who sued over his firing.

Select Board members have agreed to the settlement for former Chief Chris Morell, who filed suit last year after being dismissed in March 2010. He had held the $59,000-a-year job since 1994 and was seeking reinstatement, back pay, punitive damages and attorney’s fees.

He tells the Burlington Free Press that the outcome of the suit and the settlement vindicates his position that the brouhaha was unnecessary. The chairman of the Select Board says the town admits no wrongdoing in the settlement.
