Residents in the town of Highgate have voted against a proposed ordinance to bar recreational shooting in residential areas.

The ordinance had been requested by residents of several streets who said neighbors firing guns in inadequate backyard ranges are creating a safety hazard.

Residents defeated the measure at Town Meeting on Tuesday. The vote was 65 to 38 to defeat the proposed ban.
