About 11,500 Vermont homes and businesses lost power after gusty winds – the remnants of Hurricane Ike – blew through New England, downing trees and power lines.

About 9,500 Central Vermont Public Service Corp. customers lost electricity between 2 a.m. and 9 a.m. yesterday, but by afternoon power had been restored to more than half. Windsor, Orange and Rutland counties were the hardest hit.

Green Mountain Power Corp. reported about 2,000 outages beginning about 4 a.m. yesterday. All but a few hundred had service restored later in the morning.
