Heavy rains force roads to close

Heavy rains and then a line of thunderstorms forced a number of roadways across Vermont to close last night.

Addison County was particularly hard hit by the thunderstorms that hit as a drenching day of rain was coming to an end.

U.S. Route 7 was covered with water in New Haven, north of Middlebury. Traffic was re-routed away from the road until the rushing water cleared around sundown.

There also was water flowing across Vermont Route 125 in Cornwall, where nearly three inches of rain fell in a period of two or three hours.

Earlier in the day rushing water in Colchester undermined part of Lakeshore Drive, although that was reopened by the afternoon.
