Many Vermonters tried to find ways to stay cool yesterday, including swimmers in Lake Champlain at Kingsland Bay State Park in Ferrisburgh.

While actual high temperatures were in the 90s, it was very humid, causing the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory for the afternoon.

Erin Gepard was visiting from New York with her two children and said they were able to find ways to stay cool.

(Gepard) "We went into Burlington today and went to the Echo aquarium so we stayed cool this morning, and came back and said it’s time to go swimming."

Burlington hit a high of 97 degrees yesterday with oppressive levels of humidity. Temperatures today will be in the upper 80s to mid 90s today with less humidity.

A cooling center has been set up by the American Red Cross in Bennington to help people beat the heat.

The Bennington Rescue Squad headquarters on McKinley Street will be open from 11a.m. to 7 p.m.

The air-conditioned center has water and refreshments to help people cool off.
