The Vermont Health Department is warning consumers not to eat a certain brand of smoked mussels. A voluntary recall has been issued for the product, “Chef Noel’s New England Seafood: Applewood Smoked Mussels – Vermont Made.” The Health Department says the food may be contaminated with Listeria.

Listeria is a bacteria that can cause serious illness – especially in children, pregnant women and the elderly. Symptoms of Listeriosis include fever, muscle aches and nausea or diarrhea.

The Health Department urges consumers not to eat the recalled product and instead to return it to the store or throw it away. The recall is for four-ounce packages with expiration dates through August 25.
