Vermont Health Department officials are trying to learn how many people have been exposed to a drug-resistant staph infection that could be linked to an unlicensed, home tattoo parlor in Rutland.

Officials say one of the three people who had the “superbug” had to be hospitalized for several days last week.

The bug, which is called methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, usually lives in a dormant state on the skin of people who are otherwise healthy. Spread through skin-to-skin contact, it can be fatal if it gets into the bloodstream.
