Health Care Bill Awaits Governor’s Signature

The state is preparing to move toward a publicly funded program to provide health care to every resident. But big questions loom.

A bill that awaits Governor Peter Shumlin’s signature calls for the creation of a new five-member state panel to provide answers.

Among the questions are how the program will be paid for and what health services it will cover.

It’s also unclear whether Vermont will get permission to use federal health care dollars to help establish its new system.

The bill would move Vermont well beyond the federal health care law passed last year, which requires health insurance for everyone. More than two dozen other states are suing to overturn the federal law.
