Gun Show To Require Checks On All Buyers

Organizers of a gun show in South Burlington say people who sell firearms from their private collections will be required to do background checks on potential buyers.

The Green Mountain Gun Show will be held this weekend.

A prime target of many gun-control advocates is what’s known as the gun-show loophole. Licensed gun dealers, who typically make up the majority of vendors at gun shows, must run the name of prospective gun buyers through an FBI database.

But private individuals –   for example, a person who wants to sell the gun collection he’s had in his basement for years – can sell their weapons without conducting a background check on the buyer.

Gun show organizer Bill Borchers tells the Burlington Free he wants to prevent such private sales.

Borchers says he will require all private vendors to do background checks on all buyers following concerns about mass shootings in recent years.
