The commander of the Vermont National Guard says 1,500 soldiers are leaving Afghanistan earlier than scheduled and should be in Vermont for the holidays.

Maj. Gen. Michael Dubie says the return schedule for the Vermont Guard troops stationed in Afghanistan is moving up, and he’s optimistic everyone will be home by Christmas.

Dubie he’s looking forward to seeing more family reunions like one last week, when five Vermont National Guardsmen successfully completed their mission in Afghanistan. Another 40 are due home today.

After that, Dubie says, hundreds of soldiers will be coming back every couple of days.
