The

Statehouse building in Montpelier overlooks a large sloping lawn that’s home to political rallies, civic events and more than a few Frisbee games. Nestled into that lawn is also a garden project that’s now in its second year.

The Statehouse Food Garden was started by a band of devoted volunteers. Working with the state, they developed a plan to create vegetable garden plots that blend seamlessly with the landscaping in front of the Statehouse.       The successful first year yielded hundreds of pounds of food for the Montpelier food pantry, and brought together students, community members and local businesses to make the project go.

VPR’s Patti Daniels talked with Joann Darling, the head gardener of the Statehouse Food Garden about how the new growing season is shaping up.
