Group challenging Williston designation as growth center

An environmental group is challenging a decision to create the Vermont’s first designated growth center in Williston.

The Vermont Natural Resources Council is planning to appeal to the state Supreme Court a decision by the Expanded Downtown Board that set the growth center to include all the shopping areas around Taft Corners.

The designation makes development in the area eligible for tax incentives.

The state says the designation can’t be appealed.

VNRC’s Steve Holmes says the law was never intended to give out tax and other financial incentives to big stores in areas where people are dependent on cars.

The group wants to encourage development in another part of Taft Corners that includes grid streets and housing.
