Green Mountain forest reopening roads this month

Spring’s here, and Green Mountain National Forest is set to open its road and campgrounds, though caution is being recommended since it’s still mud season.

On Friday, forest roads will be opened and on May 22, campgrounds will follow suit.

Forest Supervisor Meg Mitchell in Rutland says the spring snowmelt has left many roads and trails soft and muddy, leaving them vulnerable to erosion damage from vehicles driving on them.

No forest roads are open to non-highway vehicles, unless by permit or administrative authorization. Some remain closed because of flood damage suffered last August. Also, the trail to Great Cliff, on Mount Horrid, and the Rattlesnake Cliff trails are temporarily closed to protect peregrine falcon nesting sites.
