Governor Howard Dean has concluded that no special prosecutor is needed to investigate the fatal shooting by police of a man who disrupted a Brattleboro church service.

Two state representatives from Windham County – Michael Obuchowski of Rockingham and Steve Darrow of Putney – had asked that Dean appoint a special counsel to investigate the death of Robert Woodward.

The 37-year-old Bellows Falls man was fatally shot by two Brattleboro officers after he disrupted a church service on December 2.

Dean spokeswoman Susan Allen says the governor has confidence that the attorney general’s office can uncover the facts in the case and take any appropriate actions.
