Governor orders police to take Windsor pot cases to attorney general

Gov. Jim Douglas is ordering state law enforcement officers to send all marijuana cases in Windsor County to the Vermont attorney general’s office or the United States attorney.

Douglas wants to bypass the local prosecutor because he’s upset that Windsor County State’s Attorney Robert Sand allowed a 61-year-old attorney to enter a court diversion program after two and a half pounds of marijuana was seized from her home.

Douglas told WPTZ-television that he has to make sure drug cases are taken seriously.

Sand is an outspoken critic of drug laws. He’s standing by his decision in the case of Martha Davis. Sand says most first-time marijuana cases are sent to the court diversion program.
