The government has dropped a civil case against a former Burlington eye doctor who was acquitted in December on criminal charges he performed unnecessary operations.

Prosecutors did not say in their filing why they had dismissed the lawsuit seeking one million dollars in damages.

Doctor David Chase still faces 128 professional misconduct charges from the Vermont Medical Practice Board. If the charges are proven he could lose his license permanently.

His trial on 71 counts of health care fraud ended in December when more than half the charges were dismissed. He was acquitted of the remaining charges.
