GE Healthcare is now implementing a furlough program under which others will have to take unpaid leaves. The South Burlington company laid off workers earlier this month.

Dennise Casey is deputy chief of staff for Governor Jim Douglas. Casey says 50 employees will be furloughed for between two weeks and 90 days. Brian McKaig, a spokesman for GE Healthcare, confirmed furloughs are taking place.

GE Healthcare employs about 780 people in South Burlington. The company laid off an unknown number of workers January 22. McKaig declined to disclose the number of layoffs.
