Gay marriage bill introduction planned today

Two Vermont House members are introducing legislation to move Vermont from civil unions to full marriage for same-sex couples.

Reps. Mark Larson, a Democrat, and David Zuckerman, a Progressive, both from Burlington, plan a Friday news conference to detail their proposal.

Meanwhile, supporters of the measure say between 100 and 200 advocates are expected at the Statehouse on Friday to lobby lawmakers.

In 2000, Vermont became the first state to grant many of the rights and responsibilities of marriage to same-sex couples through its civil unions bill. Supporters of full marriage say that set up a "separate-but-equal" system for gay and lesbian couples.
