The future looks bright for fortune-tellers, clairvoyants and tarot card readers in St. Johnsbury.

The town recently repealed an ordinance that banned the activities for more than 40 years.

Tarot card reader Maria Pawlowski says a large weight was lifted from her shoulders. She says it was oppressive to have to refrain from something that was as natural as breathing.

Fear of fraud has prompted other communities around the country to ban soothsaying.

But critics say it’s not government’s place to decide whether the beliefs or practices are fraudulent.

St. Johnsbury lifted its ban in July, at the urging of feng shui practitioner Jean O’Neal.
