Fuel tax pondered for road and bridge work

A House committee has voted to add a nickel surcharge onto the state’s gasoline and diesel tax.

The nickel surcharge on gas and diesel fuel would pay for a $120 million bond over the next three years for the transportation work.

Gov. Jim Douglas has said he opposes a fuel tax increase, saying he’d rather raise more money instead through higher motor vehicle registration and other fees.

The bill has to clear at least two other House committees and then be debated by the full House before going to the Senate.

The gas tax would be added when the bill becomes law. The diesel surcharge would go into effect in October.
