Fuel rod search taking longer than expected

The company that owns the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant says its investigation into missing fuel rods won’t be finished by the end of next month. Entergy Nuclear has told federal officials the search for the rods is taking longer than expected. Neil Sheehan of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the search is a time consuming process.

Last month officials discovered that two pieces of a broken nuclear fuel rod removed from the reactor in 1979 could not be accounted for. Entergy had promised to complete its investigation into the disappearance of the material by the end of June.
