Fuel, labor costs raise maple prices

Vermont state officials say rising fuel costs are behind increases in maple syrup prices, which are expected to hit $40 per gallon at retail this year.

Rick Marsh, president of the Vermont Maple Sugar Makers Association, says sugar makers try to keep the cost as low as possible.

But that’s tough when the oil used to heat the evaporators that turn sap from maple trees into syrup is approaching $3 per gallon.

This year’s estimated average per-gallon price is up 25 percent from five years ago in Vermont, the nation’s leading producer of maple syrup.
