Frost Heaves Fold After 5 Years On Court

The Vermont Frost Heaves professional basketball team is no more.

The Barre-based team that played in the Premier Basketball League ceased operations on Wednesday after team managers were unable to raise enough money to keep the team on the court.

General Manager Don Mandelkorn says the team could not match expenses with revenue.

The Frost Heaves was founded in 2005 by Sports Illustrated writer Alexander Wolff and his wife Vanessa.

In 2009, the Wolffs sold the Frost Heaves to Washington County-area businessmen, including Barre Mayor Thomas Lauzon. Last year the Washington County group handed off the team to former general manager Mike Healey.

Lauzon tells the Burlington Free Press attendance at the games was too low to support the team.
