An activist group wants Vermont’s attorney general to examine the relationship between a lobbyist for a nuclear power plant and the commissioner for public service.

The New England Coalition on Nuclear Pollution opposes extended operation of the Vermont Yankee plant.

The group is calling for Attorney General William Sorrell to scrutinize Public Service Commissioner David O’Brien’s friendship with Jay Thayer, a lobbyist for Entergy Nuclear Vermont Yankee.

O’Brien invited Thayer to a Christmas party last December, an event O’Brien says was personal and had nothing to do with state business.

A spokeswoman for Governor Jim Douglas responded on behalf of O’Brien. She says O’Brien is a fair commissioner who puts the ratepayers first.
