Vermont health officials say four people in the state have been infected with salmonella in a nationwide outbreak that focuses on foods with peanut butter in them.

On Saturday, federal health authorities urged people to avoid cookies, cakes, ice cream and other foods that contain peanut butter, but said most peanut butter sold in jars appears to be safe.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 474 people have been infected with salmonella typhimurium, which usually results in diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.
