Albert Barney, a longtime member of the Vermont Supreme Court, has died.

Barney joined the court in 1959 and was elevated to chief justice in 1974. He served as Vermont’s top judge for eight years.

Barney served on the court at a time when the state was reorganizing the judiciary. A constitutional amendment in 1974 called for all the courts in the state to be unified under the authority of the Supreme Court.

Barney was 89 when he died on Monday at his home in St. Johnsbury.
