Former Vermont State Rep. John Murphy is being remembered for his commitment to the working people of the state.

Murphy died Saturday in Ludlow. He was 88.

Murphy served 30 years in the Legislature, stepping down in 1998. Murphy rose to become a longtime chairman of the House General and Military Affairs Committee.

Former Vermont House Speaker Ralph Wright told the Burlington Free Press Murphy was "the face of labor in the state of Vermont for nearly four decades."

Wright says that if not for Murphy labor would have had little or no organization.

Murphy’s survivors include his wife, Floribel, and their son, John Murphy Jr. of Ludlow.

A funeral is scheduled for Wednesday in Ludlow.
