The former Vergennes police chief is facing jail after he pleaded guilty to charges he obtained a prescription drug by fraud and driving under the influence of drugs.

Fifty-one-year-old Michael Lowe entered the plea Monday in Vermont district Court in Middlebury.

He also pleaded no contest to a charge of neglect of duty.

In exchange for the pleas, the state agreed to drop charges of embezzlement and illegal possession of a narcotic.

The Burlington Free Press says prosecutors have agreed to cap their jail request at between 18 months and four years.

Lowe’s attorney will ask for no jail time.

Lowe was charged after a police cruiser he was driving collided with a parked car last June.

Sentencing is set for March 15.
