Former Vermont congressman Peter Smith has resigned from his position at the United Nations in Paris.

Smith says a death threat he received wasn’t adequately addressed. The threat was related to Smith’s reform efforts at the organization.

Smith was the highest ranking American at UNESCO, the United Nations Education, Science and Cultural Organization, where he served as associate director general for education.

Smith was trying to implement structural and management reforms within the organization.

He sent a letter to UNESCO’s director saying that fierce opposition to his reforms and the “negative climate” at the organization forced him to quit.
