Former police chief sues town, officials over firing

Fired Brattleboro police Chief John Martin has filed suit against the town, town manager and three Selectboard members over his October 31st dismissal.

Martin’s lawyer, Pietro Lynn, maintains that Selectboard Chairwoman Audrey Garfield used her radio talk show to drum up support for dismissing the chief and made false allegations about his allegedly using a town credit card for personal expenses.

Martin also says Town Manager Barbara Sondag campaigned for Martin’s ouster after he declined to endorse her for the town manager’s job.

The town says an organizational consultant found morale at the Police Department had fallen to an all-time low, and placed much of the blame with the chief.
