The former Ira town treasurer charged with embezzling more than $400,000 from the town is now facing a federal fraud charge.
Federal prosecutors this week filed a federal charge against Donald Hewitt.
The 58-year-old Hewitt was charged in October 2010 with embezzlement.
WCAX-TV reports that police say Hewitt has admitted taking the money to pay his bills.
Prosecutors say Hewitt plans to accept a plea deal that includes a sentence of up to 20 years in jail.
