A former Middlebury College hockey player who was dismissed from the team is now suing the school.

James "Jak" Knelman, a junior forward, was dismissed January 15th after leaving an alumni hockey banquet early. He says he left to spend time with his father, who was visiting for the weekend.

In a lawsuit filed yesterday in U.S. District Court in Burlington, he claims that Middlebury Coach Bill Beaney berated him in front of the team and later dismissed him. WPTZ-TV says the suit seeks damages of more than $75,000.

In a statement, the college said it would answer the complaint "in due course," but that there’s more to the story.
