Former Guardsman sentenced

A 21-year-old former Vermont National Guardsman from Winooski who served six months in one of the most dangerous cities in Iraq is going to jail for 60 days.

Officials say most of Daniel Desautels’ offenses stem from alcohol abuse caused by his time in Iraq.

Desautels’ attorney William Norful says his client’s sudden shift into criminal behavior is consistent with post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from his service in Iraq.

In court yesterday, prosecutor T.J. Donovan thanked Desautels for his service, but he still called for the jail sentence. He says Desautels has been out of control.

After his jail sentence Desautels, a judge ordered him to receive counseling from the Veterans Administration.
