The former Isle La Motte town clerk is pleading not guilty to five felony charges that she took about $100,000 in town money.

Suzanne LaBombard resigned her position in March 2007 and repaid the town $150,000 after she sold her home to her father. She had been clerk since 1985.

A criminal investigation continued after La Bombard left office. She entered the pleas Monday to one felony count of embezzlement and four felony counts of false claims.

Attorney General William Sorrell says the amount of money involved in the case is huge. He says the state isn’t in the business of saying it’s OK, just because the money was paid back.

LaBombard declined comment.

If convicted, she could get 10 years in prison.
