Former Bennington County Sheriff John H. Maloney, long known for Community Policing has died at age 88.
Maloney, a Republican, was first elected sheriff in 1946. He retired in 1985.
Bennington Town Clerk Tim Corcoran says Maloney treated everyone the same.
Following his retirement, Maloney was elected as a Bennington County assistant judge. He stepped down from that post in 1991.
Bennington Police Chief Richard Gauthier says Maloney approached policing with a personal touch.
Maloney is survived by his wife, three children, 11 grandchildren and a number of other relatives.
