The University of Vermont is undergoing a process designed to make the school stand out academically at a time when colleges and universities are becoming more price competitive.

UVM President Dan Fogel says the changes he envisions could be even bigger than the growth and other changes he’s overseen during his eight years as president.

The school is hoping to focus its academic excellence on a number areas.

The administration is inviting faculty within eight topic areas – ranging from biological sciences and bioengineering, to environment, food systems and public health – to chose research topics in which the school could excel nationally.

Fogel says the changes come with a price tag but mostly involve reallocation of resources.
