Flu Vaccine Widely Available This Year

(Host) Vermont’s health commissioner took a minute this afternoon to get a flu shot – and to remind everyone else to do the same.

Dr. Wendy Davis said the vaccine is widely available this year.

It contains three different strains of flu, including the 2009 H1N1 strain. Davis said it appears the vaccine will be a good match for the different flu strains that are circulating right now.

(Davis) "We’re seeing a mix. But so far we seem to be seeing the strains that are included in this year’s vaccine."

(Host) Davis says that – just like last year – it’s especially important for people who are most at risk for developing complications from the flu to get vaccinated – and that includes pregnant women.

(Davis) "So this means older people, young children, people with chronic diseases, lung diseases like asthma, Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, neurologic conditions and certain other chronic health conditions."

(Host) The health department has a "flu clinic finder" at HealthVermont.gov.
