Residents in the Rutland County village of Florence, fearful that their water could become polluted, are opposing a mining company’s plan to stockpile waste. OMYA Incorporated has applied for a permit under Vermont’s Act 250 land-use law to expand its storage of tailings – impurities separated from calcium carbonate when it is removed from slurry.

The company has been dumping tailings in a quarry and wants to continue piling them above ground level. A hearing Wednesday before the District One Environmental Commission focused mainly on groundwater flows in the area.
