Flooding threat from ice jam wanes

The threat of downtown flooding in Montpelier is past, at least for now.

Cooling temperatures and falling Winooski River water levels have all but eliminated the threat.

The river’s depth was just over 8 feet Monday, well below its flood stage of 15 feet.

Deputy Fire Chief Bob Gowans says the threat worsened over the weekend because of rain and temperatures in the 50s.

Gowans says ice on the river is likely to be a problem through spring.

In 1992, the river overflowed because of an ice jam, flooding Vermont’s capital and forcing evacuations.
