Floodwaters are receding in northern Vermont, but many roads remain closed and homeowners are cleaning up big messes in the wake of flooding from heavy rains and snowmelt.

In the town of Cambridge, more than 100 people moved from apartments and a senior housing facility Wednesday were put up in rent-free in condominiums at Smugglers Notch ski resort and were fed by the American Red Cross.

Todd Messier, who lives in the village of Jeffersonville, had his apartment flooded and two cars heavily damaged by floodwaters Wednesday. On Thursday, he was assessing damage. But he says he feels lucky compared with people in Alabama, which has been hit hard by severe storms resulting in hundreds of deaths.
