The first universally accessible Vermont portion of the Appalachian Trail will be formally opened Saturday in a ceremony in Killington.

The boardwalk, which can be navigated with wheelchairs, is located at the foot of Thundering Falls. It descends from Thundering Brook Road through woods to the base of Thundering Falls, and then over the Ottauquechee River flood plain across 900 feet of boardwalk built by the Green Mountain Club.

Ben Rose, executive director of the Green Mountain Club, says the boardwalk replaces a dusty road and makes at least a section of the Appalachian Trail usable by those in wheelchairs.
