Volunteer first responders across Vermont are getting some help finding new members and training those who are already serving.

Senator Bernie Sanders announced a $100,000 grant that will encourage service on volunteer fire departments and other first response organizations through improved outreach to high school students, a continuation of a successful summer program for young people and other efforts.

Sanders says the state is deeply indebted to volunteer first-responders.

A report by the U.S. Fire Administration says volunteer emergency services is a "tradition in danger of weakening and possibly even dying out."

Sanders announced the grant at a Burlington news conference attended by fire chiefs from across the state.
