Fire Poses No Threat To Vermont Air Quality

An industrial fire in east-central New York state should not be considered a threat to Vermont’s residents or the environment.

That’s the word from Vermont public safety and environmental officials who have been monitoring the fire.

The fire broke out Wednesday night in a transformer recycling plant in Ghent, about 25 miles south of Albany. It burned through much of yesterday, prompting some safety warnings in western Massachusetts.

Officials say tests of soot from the fire yesterday showed no evidence of PCB contamination. Tests results for dioxin, a potential byproduct of the burning, are expected sometime today.

The investigation into what caused the fire continues.
