Vermont State Police say the treasurer for the East Haven Volunteer Fire Department is facing embezzlement charges.

Mildred Higgins of East Haven, a former volunteer firefighter who has served as the department’s treasurer for 10 years, is accused of embezzling approximately $11,000. She was arrested Friday.

Police began investigating the report of missing funds in January after the department’s executive board members questioned the department’s general fund account balance. An independent audit determined about $11,000 was missing.

Police say the audit also found financial reports filed by Higgins for printing in the annual town report were incorrect and falsified.

Higgins has resigned as treasurer and as a volunteer with the brigade. She could not be reached for comment. A phone number listed for her has been disconnected.
