Financial problems top issue in Barre mayoral race

Recurring financial problems within Barre city government have emerged as the top issue in the race for mayor.

In a debate over the weekend, challenger Thomas Lauzon criticized Mayor Peter Anthony’s financial management of the city.

Lauzon says the past two audits of the city’s books have turned up problems, including a pending $120,000 deficit.

Anthony says he’s been trying to do a better job of involving the public in financial decisions in the city.

He says the sale of some city property may improve finances.

Barre elects a mayor and other city officials on May 9th.
