Ferry holds a unique place in the Shoreham community

At the southern tip of Lake Champlain the farm fields of Shoreham, Vermont lie just across a on a narrow stretch of water from Fort Ticonderoga, New York. Locals and travelers have been crossing that water on a ferry service that’s been in operation since the late 1700s. The Fort Ticonderoga Ferry is notable for both its history and for the unusual way its boat gets people across the lake – the open barge runs on cables that guide it to the other shore. The ferry service is a family operation and VPR’s Patti Daniels talked to one of the captains about why the ferry holds a unique place in the community.
