Vermont’s congressional delegation announced a $3 million federal grant today that will help the Chittenden County Transportation Authority buy 13 new low emission diesel buses.

CCTA says the new buses, which it expects to get within the year, meet the 2007 EPA standard for diesel engines.

Officials say the use of diesel particulate filters and low sulfur fuel will dramatically improve the fleet’s emissions.

CCTA General Manager Chris Cole says the replacement buses will ensure that CCTA meets the growing demand for its services. He says the number of riders on the Montpelier Link Express between Montpelier and Burlington grew 40 percent over the previous fiscal year.
