A six-story federal office building in Burlington has been evacuated after a suspicious package was found. The evacuation order came Tuesday morning shortly after the discovery of the package. There’s no word on why the package was considered suspicious.

Police also closed off Elmwood Avenue, where the federal building is located. The Burlington fire chief says the envelope containing an unusual substance has been removed for testing. A hazardous materials crew is checking the rest of the building.

The federal building houses courtrooms, the U.S. Post Office, and the offices of the U.S. attorney and FBI. Police do not expect the building to reopen before Wednesday.
