A Vermont farmer has been charged with animal cruelty after a heifer was found starved to death in his barn.

Twenty-eight-year-old Daniel Easterbrooks, of Lyndon, pleaded not guilty Monday to two counts of animal cruelty that were lodged after authorities said they found one heifer dead, and another so ill it couldn’t stand…also a barn floor covered with manure and urine.

The Caledonian-Record reports the farm was inspected in March by assistant state veterinarian Dr. Joel Russo and Jim Cameron, animal health field supervisor for the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, and that they found 40 adult cows and 20 heifers in the barn with no feed, no bedding and excessive manure and urine.
